How are Orthodontists different than Dentists?

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" We hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming an orthodontist Dr. Valeriano started out in dental school and earned a DDS (dental degree), just like your dentist. After dental school however, Dr. Valeriano decided he wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So he stayed in school for a few more years and became an expert in orthodontics; which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Orthodontic Emergency

What is an Orthodontic Emergency?

A blow to the face or jaws causing loose or broken teeth

and soft tissue trauma is a medical emergency and

should be seen immediately in an emergency room or by

their general dentist. Our office is not equipped to handle

these situations and we will only want to make

“repairs” to orthodontic appliances after the true

emergencies are treated.

Fortunately orthodontic emergencies are very rare.

Loose bands, brackets or wires are only an emergency if

they are causing excessive discomfort or swelling which

cannot be relieved with wax or other home cures.

Valeriano Orthodontics Learns New "Tricks of the Trade" at the Damon Forum

To end January and start the New Year off right, my staff and I attended the Annual Damon Forum in Phoenix, Arizona. I was accompanied by our patient managers, Dana and Kim, and our treatment coordinator, Sheena. We were thrilled with the experience and the ability to learn more about the Damon System.
