Dr. V Reminds You That Regular Checkups Are Important!

Are you brushing your teeth twice a day? If yes, that’s great; but, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit the dentist every six months in addition to brushing your teeth a couple times a day. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

During an oral exam the doctor will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!

Keep Your Teeth Clean and Healthy!

If you are looking for a great way to keep your teeth clean and healthy in addition to brushing and flossing, we recommend using new MI Paste. This product has the ability to deliver calcium phosphate and fluoride directly to the teeth, helps prevent tooth decalcification, can repair any permanent stains, and can also reduce tooth sensitivity.

So how do you use MI Paste?

• Apply the paste at bed time after a thorough brushing

• Place a pea sized amount on your finger and rub onto teeth at the gum line and areas of decalcification (permanent staining). Repeat for other arch

• Leave the paste in place for 3 minutes and then rub the teeth with your tongue

• Do NOT eat, drink or rinse after use for at least 8 hours

This product is not recommended for anyone with an allergy to milk protein or hydroxybenzoates.

Lactose intolerant patients CAN use MI Paste.

MI Paste is not to be used in place of your regular toothpaste. This is a wonderful product that can give great results if used regularly. This product is available for all of our patients to purchase in our office, and makes a wonderful stocking stuffer!

Holiday Foods to Avoid - and Tasty Treats to Eat

Having braces can be tough, especially during the holiday season when there are so many delicious treats everywhere. While it may be tempting, we always recommend that our patients avoid any foods that are hard, chewy, sticky or gooey. Hard foods can break brackets and sticky foods will easily get caught in the bracket and wires.

We still want you to enjoy this time of year though, so here are some suggestions of foods that are “braces-friendly” and will still taste every bit as sweet!

• Soft candies like chocolate or fudge WITHOUT nuts
• Soft cookies
• Cake or pie

As always, remember to brush and floss after eating!!!

Everybody Benefits from Braces!

Braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers anymore! Anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic care; whether it is correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.

To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident, taking action early can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.

If you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, don’t worry! You’re never too old for a beautiful smile. Set up an appointment for a consultation and find out how adult orthodontics will transform your smile, and your life!

Mooooove Over Gum Disease!

Is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it should be! A recent study from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease (also known as gum disease).

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study show that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite, and every sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles and good oral health!

For more information about keeping your teeth healthy, call us at 704-364-6544 or visit www.valerianoorthodontics.com.

Married? Smile Bright!

It’s Fall. Leaves are turning shades of orange and red, the wind is picking up and getting cooler, and pumpkin patches are full of bright oranges pumpkins. Yet another wonderful smile!

Our office received this beautiful card and we wanted to share it with you.

Dear Dr Valeriano -

As the front of the card says - we should all use the gifts He has given us. You all exemplify that command! With each individual gift you have provided such a welcoming and cheerful office and service. You all put patients at ease with your relaxed nature. We never heard an unkind word or anyone ever snapping at another. The front desk never made us feel as foolish as we already felt when we missed an appointment or came at the wrong time. Your outreach mission is a constant reminder of the needs of others and that charity can be found everywhere. I loved how you emphasize positive reinforcement over reprimands! You were always efficient, on time and attentive. Can you tell how thrilled we have been with our association? It was a joy to watch our daughter glance in mirrors yesterday at her beautiful smile! Again - you have given the gift of pride, confidence, and happiness! Thank you for such an outstanding experience!! Many thanks!

From our family to yours.

Are There Teeth Grinders in Your House?

Grind, grind, grind, grind. If you live with a teeth grinder, especially a night grinder, you may be familiar with this unpleasant sound. Other symptoms of teeth grinding (technically called “bruxism”) include:

• Sensitivity in the teeth
• Tightness or pain in the jaw
• Dull headaches, earaches, or facial pain
• Chipped, worn down, or loose teeth

People frequently grind their teeth in response to stress, so taking measures to reduce or eliminate stress can help solve the problem.

Here are some things you can try to stop grinding:

Cut back on caffeine and alcohol

Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration

Relax right before bedtime with a warm bath or shower

• Help your jaw learn to relax by quitting any chewing
habits (pens, pencils, gum)

• When clenching or grinding happens during the day, place your tongue between your teeth to serve as a reminder to avoid the habit

If grinding goes untreated, it can lead to chipped teeth, worn enamel, chronic pain, or even TMJ, a painful jaw disorder. If the teeth-grinder in your house can’t stop, make an appointment to see us by calling Dr. Valeriano. Dr. Valeriano can help determine the cause of the problem and possibly even prescribe a custom mouthpiece to help break the habit. To schedule your complimentary exam, please call our office at 704-364-6544.

Is it Time to Schedule a Check Up?

Even with braces it's important to remember to still visit your dentist every six months for a regular checkup and teeth cleaning! At Valeriano Orthodontics we recommend our patients visit the dentist regularly to help give them the brightest, healthiest smile during and after their treatment with us.

Make Your Smile Shine

Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Even during your orthodontic treatment, your dentist can examine your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue to check for problems you might not see or feel including cavities and tooth decay. Before beginning any orthodontic treatment remember to schedule a dental checkup with your dentist for any neccessary dental work you may need. Then, once you begin your orthodontic treatment remember to continue scheduling reglar dental checkups every six months!

Is Invisalign Really Customized for Each Patient?

Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work. If you were a candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we’d do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we would then look at this current positioning and compare that to the ideal placement of your teeth – in other words, exactly where we would want them to end up.

Next we’d use the software to map out the exact path your teeth would take from now through the end of your treatment. Based on this precise prescription, a set of custom aligners would be created specially for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you’d wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time, each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. And the whole time it would be your secret, since the aligners are virtually invisible!

Dr. Valeriano is a certified Invisalign provider. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, give us a call at 704-364-6544.

Why Is It So Important To Have Straight Teeth?

Some people wonder why we work so hard to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque – the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to decay – and because they are easier to keep clean. Plaque can lead to cavities and can increase the risk of gum disease.

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, give us a call at 704-364-6544 to set up a consultation. Dr. Valeriano can help you decide whether you could benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Your Friend: Fluoride

There are so many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment. You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your mouth and appliances from being damaged. But did you know there is another, often forgotten about, way to keep your teeth clean and healthy during your treatment? Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties, topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement. Dentists and orthodontists use in-office fluoride treatments to help protect the oral health of adults and children undergoing dental/orthodontic procedures.

Fluoride used in the dentist/orthodontists office is often times a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask your doctor how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. Your doctor may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for at-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

More Adults Getting Braces

Some could say it's a new cosmetic trend, others may say that technological advances in orthodontics have paved the way, regardless of the reasoning, their has been a dramatic increase in adults getting braces. As the nation becomes more aware of the effects of oral health on one's overall health, the urgency to have that perfect and healthy smile grows. For many, this means that getting braces is no longer "out of their age range."

It used to be that tweens and teens were the only prime candidates for braces. It is still true that the younger you are when getting braces, the easier the treatment is. This is because your body is still growing and your smile is still settling into place. This is also why many insurance companies have an age restriction when it comes to paying for braces. Yet, with the emergence of technologies like the Damon System and Invisalign, the insurance companies are wising up and cutting that age restriction to ensure that adults can take advantage in these evolved treatment options.

So, when considering getting braces, don't hesitate just because of your age. I encourage you to ask me what treatment might be right for you.

Gum and Oral Health

As oral health becomes more and more important (it's even becoming something of a fad), it's interesting to watch how gum companies have changed their ad campaigns. There's EXTRA which mainly focuses on it's low calorie weight loss appeal (it was constantly displayed on the Biggest Loser this year), Stride is all about long lasting taste, but what about Orbitz and Trident? These gums are all about dental health. In fact, the other day I saw a commercial about how Trident helps to restore tooth enamel. Now it's definitely important to know that not all gum is good for your teeth. In fact, there's quite a lot of gum that's just horrible for your teeth - like Bubblegum. So the next time you are at the checkout stand and want to get a bargain buy of gum, consider getting a pack of Trident... like Trident whitening for example.

Considering Damon Brackets?

Have you been considering getting Damon Brackets but aren't quite sure if they are right for you? There is a great deal of differences between Invisalign, the Damon System, and traditional metal braces. I have spoken a lot in this blog about those differences, but I thought it would be a good idea for you to see what some others have to say about it. Check out this video about a family's experience with Damon:

Keeping Your Teeth Clean While Wearing Braces

If you are considering traditional metal braces over Invisalign, keep in mind the upkeep required to clean your teeth. I always warn patients that they should always brush. If you don't brush, you may end up with stains on your teeth once the braces are removed. I suggest brushing 2-3 times per day.

Beyond brushing, it's also important to floss. This may be considered hard when you have braces, so it's a great thing that Paradise Dental Technologies came out with the Platypus Ortho Flosser.

Early reviews are stating that this patent pending product is well liked by patients with braces. If this is something you're interested in obtaining, you can contact your orthodontist for more information.

Keeping Your Invisalign Aligners Up to Shape

Many people know that Invisalign is a great solution to braces if you don't want to experience the look and feel of traditional metal braces. What few people know, though, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. Good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invialign aligners, ask yourself the following questions:

1.) Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.
2.) Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.
3.) Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits.

Braces aren't just for teenagers

The other day, while channel surfing, this image of a smiling 80 year old woman caught my eye. The title of the story being aired: 80-year-old Women Finally Has Straight Teeth. As an orthodontist in Charlotte North Carolina, I have come across patients of all ages, but this story touched a special note in my heart. It's never too late to get that perfect smile!

"Oh wow," she exclaimed while looking in the mirror. "Now my son won't have to say, 'You don't ever smile, mom,' because I'll always be smiling!"

Braces Today vs. Yesterday

I came across a great article the other day: It’s not wins, but braces helping athletes smile. This was pretty interesting, well written, and filled with some inspiring true life experiences. The author recounts his childhood with braces, explaining the pain and longevity he endured just to get that perfect straight smile. Now, years later, he coaches a basketball team where every member has braces. The comparison of his experience to theirs is something worth noting:

What past and present braces-wearing youngsters are told is they can continue to eat anything they like minus popcorn, hard candy; anything gooey and definitely off-limits is the chewing of ice. OK, that essentially wipes out movie-going during the years one wears braces. As for pizzas, orthodontists certainly can’t expect preteens to stay away from a hot cheese pizza, smothered in whatever. If mine did, I disobeyed his order.

While he viewed his time as nothing short of horrible, his students love their braces and can't help but show them off! This is testament to all of the recent innovations in orthodontics and another reason to smile!!

What is it?

The Invisalign System™ is a series of clear, removable, comfortable aligners that are virtually undetectable. In fact, no one will even know that you're wearing braces! So you can smile more during treatment and enjoy your beautiful new smile long after. Your entire Invisalign series is created though the use of 3-D computer imaging technology, and has been proven effective with patients worldwide. More than 70% of orthodontists in the US and Canada are certified to treat with Invisalign, but not all can say with confidence that they are one of Invisalign's® Premier Providers. With Dr. Valeriano, you know that you are receiving the best Invisalign treatment around!

About Invisalign®

Why would I want it?

Not only are aligners invisible, they are also removable, making for a more comfortable and convenient orthodontic experience. Unlike traditional braces, aligners can be removed at any time, allowing patients to eat and drink with ease, plus brushing and flossing are no problem. And, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions, Invisalign is the most comfortable orthodontic treatment available. In addition, the lack of metal and wire typically means that you spend less time in your doctor's office for adjustments. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start, so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete. Imagine knowing how great your smile will look even before your treatment is done – now that should keep you motivated!

How does it work?

Invisalign patients wear each set of aligners for approximately two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Valeriano has prescribed. You'll visit Dr. Valeriano about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages nine to 15 months, and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case. Just visit Dr. Valeriano for your complimentary evaluation to see what he prescribes for you.

Discover the many benefits of Invisalign by scheduling your appointment today! For those who truly desire straighter teeth, but cringe at the thought of metal and wire, Invisalign is clearly better!
